Luftbilder Ostseefjord Schlei, Maasholm, Port Olpenitz, Schleimünde | Die Entwicklung als wichtiger Hafenort begann im 18. Jahrhundert. Die erste Befestigung mit Pfählen wurde 1782 angelegt, blieb aber nicht bestehen, sodass die Schiffer erneut um Hilfe baten. Die heutige Molenanlage wurde 1795 bis 1796 unter der Leitung eines Hafenbaumeisters aus Kopenhagen errichtet, finanziert allein durch die Combinierte Schiffergesellschaft zu Kappeln und Arnis, die für die Nutzung Zölle einnahm.
